Joseph Mallord William Turner Eton College Chapel from the River to the East, Setting Sun 1805

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 129 Verso:
Eton College Chapel from the River to the East, Setting Sun 1805
D06344
Turner Bequest XCVIII 129a
Pencil on white laid paper, 182 x 117 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. The view is from a similar position as folios 128 verso–129 (D06342–D06343); by Romney Lock Island, downstream of the lock itself, but looking in the opposite direction. It shows the sun sinking in the west and must have preceded the moonrise view of Windsor Castle on 128 verso–129, as observed by Hill.
