Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The identification of Lewes is correctly given by Edward Croft-Murray in pencil annotations to a copy of Finberg now in Tate’s Library. The view looks east towards the castle, from a spot near what is now Bradford Road. For Lewes in this sketchbook see note to folio 31 (D05648).
