Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Rather than Bodiam Castle, for which see notes to folio 67 (D05694) for drawings in this sketchbook, these ruins belong to the thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Bayham Abbey of which views follow on folios 83–5 (D05700–D05702), as first observed by Edward Croft-Murray. Bayham Abbey, standing in grounds landscaped by Humphry Repton, is about two miles west of Lamberhurst.
