Finberg lists this leaf as one of six believed ‘to have formed part of this book’. It is now bound in as folio 73 verso, with the image inverted. The recto is blank, but inscribed by an unknown hand in pencil ‘7 1/8 x 9 1/16’.
This is one of two detailed drawings of Brougham Castle associated with this sketchbook by Finberg; see note to folio 72 verso (D10314; Turner Bequest CXXXVII 70) for the subject and background. Turner later combined the drawings as the basis for his watercolour Brougham Castle, near the Junction of the Rivers Eamont and Lowther (Tate D18147; Turner Bequest CCVIII N), engraved by William Say in 1825 for The Rivers of England. For a view of Yanwath Hall, south of Penrith at Eamont Bridge, also drawn in 1809, see folio 71 verso (D10316; Turner Bequest CXXVII 72).
The paper is discoloured from exposure in the touring Second Loan Collection.1
