Turner shows the Norman and medieval church of St Leonard’s, Hythe with its rebuilt eighteenth-century tower from inland, in what is now North Road. The coastline, with Martello towers, is visible beyond. The inscription probably refers to Sandgate a little further up the coast towards Folkestone, rather than to Sandling as noted on the recto (D10492). For a more distant view of the church as seen from the Ashford road see folio 51 verso of this sketchbook (D10497; Turner Bequest CXL 45a).
