This view is taken from the north-west, approaching the road up to the Pipewell Gate (also North or Ferry) Gate towards Ferry Hill. There is a closer view of the same approach to the town on folio 65 verso of the sketchbook (D10523; Turner Bequest CXL 58a). For the possible identity of the tower on the right seen in both these sketches and in a detail on folio 66 (D10524; Turner Bequest CXL 59) as well as elsewhere in Turner’s work, but no longer extant, see notes to the earlier Sussex sketchbook (Tate D05763; Turner Bequest XCII 44).
