One of a series of views of Crichton Castle from the north (see folio 86; D13728; CLXVII 78), this rather rapid sketch looks south along the Tyne valley with the castle on the eastern bank to the left of the drawing, and what may be several ruins on the hillside in the foreground. With the plunging rugged hillsides (rather exaggerated) and the castle rising above, this is a Romantic vision of Crichton Castle that is born out in the final design, Crichton Castle, circa 1818 (The Morgan Library and Museum, New York).1
