The dark, uneven tone of the grey watercolour wash covering this page makes Turner’s sketch of the Swiss Alps near the Simplon Pass almost impossible to see. The only clearly discernible passage is the jagged peaks of the mountains, heightened by white scratched-out areas near the top right-hand corner of the sheet.
