Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
David Hill speculates that Turner’s second night out of Paris was spent at Autun;1 see folios 20 and 22 of this sketchbook (D04412, D04414). This panorama across the Saône valley towards the mountains he had come to see would thus have greeted him on the morning of his third day travelling, as he reached the edge of the escarpment on his way to Chalon-sur-Saône, for which see folios 17 and 18 (D04409, D04410). Turner’s belief that he could by now see Mont Blanc was perhaps optimistic.
