This is the first of five Thames river scenes in this sketchbook (folios 39 verso–40 verso and 42 verso; D17712–D17714, D17717). Drawn with the sketchbook inverted, this view, taken from a boat or bridge, looks along the river with a wharf on the right and a wooded bank on the left. There are two large Thames barges at the centre of the picture, with vessels at sail to their right and two smaller rowing boats in front. Although the exact location of this drawing has not been established, it is likely to be somewhere near Isleworth which is the location of the sketch on folio 39 verso.
