This rough sketch of a tree appears on the verso of Turner’s vignette illustration, Ship-building (An Old Oak Dead). The watercolour was engraved and published in the 1834 edition of Rogers’s Poems, where it appears as the tail-piece to a poem entitled, ‘To an Old Oak’ (see Tate D27692; Turner Bequest CCLXXX 175). The sketch is probably a preliminary drawing for an accompanying vignette, An Old Oak, the head-piece for the same poem (see Tate D27691; Turner Bequest CCLXXX 174).
