With the sketchbook inverted is a second view of the Cumbrian town of Appleby (see folio 15 verso; D25553). The most prominent feature is Appleby Castle which stands on a hill to the south of the town. Behind it to the northeast are Murton Pike and other hills of the Pennines, and Turner has noted a ‘road’ in the foreground of the picture. There is a small study of the castle from a closer proximity on folio 16 verso (D25555).
