With the sketchbook inverted are three sketches which probably all show Craigmillar Castle near Edinburgh. The top sketch looks most like the castle, matching views from the east made in the Abbotsford sketchbook (Tate D25972; Turner Bequest CCLXVII 25). Turner probably visited Craigmillar on the same outing that took him to Duddingstone (folio 7; D25654) and Blackford Hill (folio 63 verso; D25757). This sketch may be continued from the right in the small sketch beneath it to the left.
Beneath this is a larger sketch of a building on a hill with a two-arched bridge and a few houses in the foreground. This may be another view of the castle, perhaps from the south where Dalkeith road crosses Braid Burn.
