Both sketches on this page show Brougham Castle, near Penrith, from the west. In the top sketch the generally intact keep at the left is contrasted with the more ruinous service buildings to the right, and the three-arched Castle Bridge is shown at the left spanning the River Eamont. Above it in the distance is Cross Fell, the highest point in the Pennines. The sketch below is of the same view, but was made after taking a few steps back so that more of the River Lother (which joins with the Eamont just before the bridge) is shown snaking its way towards the bridge.
