From about 300 metres away from New Abbey, near Dumfries, the three sketches on this page (which is turned to the right) move from the south-west to the west beyond the mill and millpond. The top view is therefore from the south-west as in the bottom sketch of folio 48 (D25853), with the corn mill in the centre of the foreground, and the abbey behind the houses on New Abbey’s Main Street at the top right.
In the middle sketch we have moved further round to the west and can now see New Abbey Bridge at the left of the picture, and the abbey on the right. Finally, at the bottom of the page is a very sketchy view from the west taking in the bridge at the left, the abbey in the centre and the mill to the right.
At the bottom of the page, on the inside edge of the page, are a few drawn lines which continue from the sketch of hills beyond New Abbey on folio 49 (D25857). For more information on Turner’s visit to New Abbey see folio 46 (D25851).
