This view of Hermitage Castle from the west is close to the view on folio 67 that formed the basis of Turner’s vignette illustration of Hermitage Castle circa 1832 (watercolour, private collection),1 engraved for the fourth volume of Sir Walter Scott’s Poetical Works. It shows the castle on a slight rise in the middle distance with Hermitage Water in the foreground.
