Continued from folio 48 verso (D26009; CCLXVII 48a) is the study for Turner’s watercolour, Berwick-upon-Tweed circa 1832 (whereabouts unknown),1 engraved for volume 12 of Sir Walter Scott’s, Poetical Works. This half of the sketch shows a view south-east along the River Tweed towards the estuary. At the centre of the page is the impressive multi-arched Berwick Bridge (see D25725–D25726; Turner Bequest CCLXV 45a–46), beyond which are boats that Turner also incorporated in his final design. The ‘white wall’ of Berwick Castle is shown at the left of the page, descending the steep cliff.
See folio 48 verso for more information and references to further views of Berwick.
