Joseph Mallord William Turner A Wooded Landscape c.1809-10

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
A Wooded Landscape circa 1809–10
D09008
Turner Bequest CXXVII 30a
Pencil on white wove paper, 202 x 125 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
As set out in the Introduction, this sketchbook contains identified views of Cumbria and Sussex. Like the wooded scenes shown in D09004, D09005 and D09007, the recto of the present leaf (CXXVII 27, 28, 30), this sketch lacks prominent landmarks and cannot currently be associated with certainty with either county. The forms towards the top right are possibly horses.
Technical notes:
This is a face of one of a few single leaves which, with a greater number of loose bifolio sheets, constitute the so-called Sandycombe and Yorkshire sketchbook. The folded sheets were not bound, but placed inside each other in a sequence which is not entirely recoverable (see the sketchbook’s Introduction for a suggested order).
