J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

This sketch of rugged hillsides is likely to have been made in the Trossachs between Loch Katrine and Loch Achray as it is surrounded in the sketchbook by views of those locations. It is difficult to determine the logic of the sketch exactly, as there may be several slight sketches overlapping each other. However, the shape of the hills, their rugged appearance and the style of their execution are all reminiscent of the hills at the northern end of Loch Achray in the Trossachs forest. At the bottom left of the page, drawn with the sketchbook inverted, is a small thumbnail drawing of hills. This probably shows a view nearby, perhaps the western end of Loch Achray from the southern side of the loch as in folio 57 (D26548).
