Turner visited Cowdray Castle at the time of his visit to Petworth in 1809 and drew it in his Petworth sketchbook (Tate D07517–D07519; Turner Bequest CIX 6–8). This much slighter sketch shows part of the west front with the bridge over the River Rother at left.
