The two sketches on this page, along with folios 72 verso and 73 verso (D26232, D26234), are sketches from the sea which depict a town on the coast with a ruin on a cliff, a lighthouse and a multi-arched bridge. These sketches belong to a larger group of sketches of the coast from the sea, made as Turner travelled south along the east coast from Edinburgh to London (folios 70 verso–77 verso; D26228–D26242). The location of these sketches has not been identified, but the presence of the bridge, especially on folio 73 verso, suggests that the town is at the mouth of a river.
