Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Rather than the Old College of Edinburgh University, as Finberg suggested,1 David Wallace-Hadrill has identified this building as the headquarters of the Bank of Scotland on the Mound in Edinburgh.2 The view is from Bank Street to the south-east. Beneath is a separate study of part of the building. There are further sketches of the building on the inside back cover of this sketchbook (D41048).
