Howard Hanley identifies the view as of Bridport (West Bay), relating it to the previous drawing in this book, on folio 47 verso (D08452) as the sources for the Southern Coast watercolour Bridport, Dorsetshire circa 1818 (Bury Art Gallery and Museum).1 However, the profile of the distant cliff drawn here is less steep, and conforms closely to that shown in a more precise view, identified by Hanley as Charmouth (albeit inscribed ‘Bridport’), about seven miles to the west, in the larger Corfe to Dartmouth sketchbook (Tate D08840; Turner Bequest CXXIV 29).
