The viewpoint appears to be on or near the Exeter road between Dawlish Warren and Dawlish, looking south-west across Babbacombe Bay to Hope’s Nose near Torquay, as discussed under another view of the coast on folio 67 verso (D08491; CXXIII 64a).
The Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast did not include a view of Dawlish by Turner, but rather a vignette, engraved in 1820 after Luke Clennell, showing the cliffs near the town (Tate impressions: T05374, T05375; see the introduction to Turner’s 1811 West Country tour). Dawlish is mentioned in Turner’s poetry on folio 164 verso (D08670; CXXIII 161a).
