J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

Without specifying particular folios, Arthur Ebdon mentions three views of Ogwell Mill in his account of Turner and the Teignmouth area. The mill formerly stood beside the River Lemon on Ogwell Mill Lane, north of East Ogwell and west of Newton Abbot. Its distinctive Dutch gable is recorded in an 1811 etching by Samuel Prout, and the picturesque mill, the rather ramshackle buildings around it and its wooded setting are seen in an 1828 lithograph by Thomas Hewitt Williams (both Westcountry Studies Library, Exeter).1

There are further studies on the verso and on folio 77 recto (D08509, D08510; CXXIII 73a, 74), while Bradley Manor, a little down the valley, appears on folio 77 verso (D08511; CXXIII 74a). Turner also sketched the similar mill at Berry Pomeroy, about six miles to the south, on folio 148 recto (D08642; CXXIII 145).
