Joseph Mallord William Turner Looe Harbour 1811

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 117 Verso:
Looe Harbour 1811
D08586
Turner Bequest CXXIII 114a
Pencil on white wove writing paper, 75 x 117 mm
Inscribed by Turner in ink ‘Lo’ or ‘Do’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg read Turner’s inscription as ‘Do’ (i.e. ditto), presuming that this referred back to Turner’s inscription ‘E W Looe’ on folio 115 verso (D08582; CXXIII 112a); it may alternatively be ‘Lo’ as an abbreviated form of the place name. In either eventuality, this slight sketch appears to show a view from Hannafore Road, West Looe, looking east across the harbour with the mast of a boat or small ship at an angle suggesting that it is beached, to the coast beyond East Looe. For other views, see under folio 115 verso.
