The view is from the bank of the Penryn River, looking south-east past Flushing on the left Falmouth Harbour to Falmouth on the right with Pendennis Castle, on the skyline at the centre beyond. Despite later developments the scene is still recognisable from along St Peter’s Road and Trefusis Road.
Turner could have reached the small port by road or river, as discussed under folio 24 verso (D08899; CXXV 23a). The next drawing, on folio 26 verso (D08903; CXXV 25a) shows Penryn, looking in the opposite direction from Flushing. The castle is seen from the south-west on folios 28 recto and verso (D08905, D08906; CXXV 27, 27a), while further sketches up to folio 31 recto (D08909; CXXV 30) address other aspects of Falmouth and nearby St Mawes.

Technical notes:
The bottom edge is slightly frayed due to being misaligned and projecting slightly when the sketchbook is closed.
