The south-western corner of the castle is seen from down on the rocky shoreline, which is continued on folio 39 recto opposite (D08922; CXXV 38). The west front is partly hidden at this steep angle by the batteries below it. Turner studied that side from higher up on folios 37 verso–38 recto (D08919, D08920; CXXV 36a–37). The far end of the southern range was extensively rebuilt in the 1870s, with the addition of cylindrical turrets embedded in the wall toward the corner.1 See under folio 41 recto (D08926; CXXV 40) for the possibility that the sketch is a continuation to the left of the present sketch, suggesting that the pages are not in their original relative sequence.
