The small village of Marechiaro lies on the Posillipo coastline to the west of Naples. This sketch is taken from the rocky shoreline looking east towards distant Vesuvius. The pointed bell-tower in the centre of the composition represents the Church of Santa Maria del Faro but the building on the cliffs to the left is currently unidentified.
