The sketch at the bottom of the page is part of a panoramic 180-degree view of the Gulf of Salerno. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 87 verso (D16078; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 85a), but this side represents the vista looking south-east in the direction of the Plain of Paestum and the Cilento Mountains.
As Turner’s inscriptions indicate the studies at the top of the page depict the ruins of the castle of San Gennaro near the town of Genzano di Roma. Turner observed the remains from the Via Appia on the return route to Rome from the south. A further sketch can be found on folio 59 verso (D16023; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 57a).
