Turner’s inscription beneath this sketch indicates that it is a distant view of Velletri, a town on the edge of the Alban Hills, approximately twenty miles south-east of Rome. The Via Appia passes directly through the town en route to Naples. Turner made a thumbnail pen-and-ink copy of a related vista after John ‘Warwick’ Smith (1749–1831) in the Italian Guide Book sketchbook (Tate D13968; Turner Bequest CLXXII 20).
