Turner made a number of sketches at Terracina, a picturesque town on the Tyrrhenian coast approximately half-way between Rome and Naples. This drawing depicts part of a panoramic view of the port looking east towards the distant town of Sperlonga and the Bay of Gaeta. In the foreground, a group of figures, possibly fishermen, are seated on the beach near the water’s edge. The vista continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, with the heights of Monte Sant’Angelo, the Temple of Jupiter Anxur and the Pisco Montano, see folio 24 (D15601; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 23).
