This swift sketchy landscape drawing appears to depict Itri, a small historic city situated amidst the Arunci mountains on the nineteenth-century route between Rome and Naples. Turner’s view is from the south-east looking towards the castle and was probably executed from a moving carriage. For further studies see folio 25 verso (D15605; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 24a) and the Naples, Paestum, Rome sketchbook (Tate D15952; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 22).
