As Finberg first identified, the buildings silhouetted against the horizon in this sketch represents a distant view of Capua, seen from the western approach on the road to Naples.1 The peak of Monte Tifata is visible beyond. Turner made a number of detailed sketches of the town see folios 33 verso–35 verso (D15620–D15624; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 32a–34a).
