Turner’s route to Naples took him through the town of Capua where he made several detailed sketches of the topography and architecture. This drawing represents a view from the northern point of entry to the town, the Ponte Romano, looking across the Volturno river towards the opposite bank. The tower in the centre of the skyline is the campanile of the Duomo (Cathedral) of Santissimi Stefano e Agata, whilst the dome on the right represents the Chiesa dell’Annunziata. Rising above Capua in the distance is the peak of Monte Tifata. Further sketches can be found on folios 33–33 verso and 34 verso–35 verso (D15619–D15620 and D15622–D15624; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 32–32 verso and 33 verso–34a).
