The villas and houses within this landscape sketch remain unidentified. However, Turner’s inscription in the bottom right-hand corner suggests that it may depict a view of San Rocco di Capodimonte, an area to the north of the city near the Palazzo Reale on the Capodimonte Hill.
Further sketches have been drawn on the left-hand side of the page, parallel with the spine. These include a view of Naples from Capodimonte, looking south across the city towards Sant’Elmo, the coastline and the island of Capri. Above this meanwhile is a more detailed study of the line of buildings silhouetted along the shoreline from the same viewpoint.
