This page contains several different views from Turner’s exploration of Naples and the surrounding area. The two upper landscape vistas depict locations in Naples including, at the top, Castel Sant’Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino seen from the quayside in front of Castel Nuovo.
The sketch at the bottom of the page represents a view of Lake Avernus with the wooded hills of the Campi Flegrei peninsula beyond. Turner has made a separate detailed study of the so-called Temple of Apollo, the ruin of a Roman thermal bath hall which stands on the eastern shore of the lake. For further studies of Lake Avernus see folios 19 verso, 27 verso, 34 verso–35, 71 verso, 72, 77–78 (D15592, D15608, D15622–D15623, D15696–D15697, D15707–D15709; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 19a, 26a, 33a–34, 69a–70, 75–76).
