The sketches on this page represent views of the Lattari Mountains from the nineteenth-century road between Naples and Salerno. The route entered the mountains at Nocera and passed through Cava de’ Tirreni and Molina before emerging on the Amalfi coast at Vietri sul Mare. The rough nature of Turner’s draughtsmanship suggests that he was drawing from a moving carriage or other vehicle, and despite the presence of buildings within the landscape the shaky lines makes the individual locations difficult to identify. The main composition at the bottom right-hand side continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 29 (D15792).
