This sketch probably depicts a view somewhere on the Yonne river in France, a tributary of the Seine which flows through the region of Burgundy (Bourgogne). Turner followed the course of a stretch of the river during his return trip from Italy in January 1820. The vista looks from the one of the river banks towards a bridge with a church on the right-hand side. The same building may appear within another study, see folio 99 (D16874; Turner Bequest CXCIII 98), however, the location currently remains unidentified.
