At Terni, Turner made a short detour from his route in order to visit the nearby Cascata, or Caduta delle Marmore, an impressive waterfall created by the descent of the River Velino into the valley below. This sketch depicts Papigno, a small village built upon on a rocky outcrop in a narrow valley between Terni and the Falls. In the bottom right-hand corner is a bridge over the River Nera whilst in the background is the plain of Terni. A more detailed composition can be found on folios 49 verso–50 (D14749–50).
