Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 54 Verso:
Gibbet Hill, near Hindhead 1807
D06576
Turner Bequest C 49a
Pencil on off-white wove paper, 118 x 187 mm
Stamped in black ‘C 49a’ top right, inverted

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted, this is an extremely slight sketch but still shows a hint of the gibbet on top of the hill; see folio 22 of the sketchbook (D06540; Turner Bequest C 21). Turner’s design (Tate D08130; Turner Bequest CXVII C) for his Liber Studiorum plate Hind Head Hill, 1811, was based on this sketch. See also Turner’s verses on the hill with its ‘kreaking irons’ inside the back cover (D40615).
