Auckland Castle and its deer shelter are seen from the north-east, with Newton Cap Bridge on the Wear below to the right. For the histories of the castle and deer shelter respectively, see the entries for folio 22 recto and 24 recto (D12346, D12349). This is one in a sequence of views between folios 21 verso (D12345) and the present page, following the course of the River Gaunless from south to north anti-clockwise around the castle towards the River Wear.
Although Finberg brackets this drawing with that on folio 26 verso opposite (D12353) as though continuous, the latter is a sketchier view from the same spot with a little more foreground including a bridge over the River Gaunless and a prominent tree on the left.
The view is repeated (including the Gaunless bridge and the tree) in a larger, more detailed study in the Raby sketchbook, used on the same tour and indeed presumably on the same occasion and from the same viewpoint (Tate D12307, D12294; Turner Bequest CLVI 27–20).
Technical notes:
There is a short tear towards the left of the bottom edge.
