A highly schematic drawing of the Castel Sant’Angelo and the Ponte Sant’Angelo seen from the east, looking down-river, see folio 34 (D16214; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 33). The sketch has been drawn with a soft pencil extremely swiftly and Turner has omitted the dome of St Peter’s which should be visible directly beyond the bridge. The gestural line of the reflection of light from the setting sun on the river is reminiscent of Turner’s watercolour, The Scarlet Sunset, (see Tate D24666; Turner Bequest CCLIX 101).
