Turner made a large number of drawings with the Tiber as the central focus. This sketch depicts a view looking up-river towards the Ponte Sant’Angelo. The artist has concentrated his energies on the buildings flanking the banks of the river and has entirely omitted the vast cylindrical silhouette of the most famous landmark, the Castel Sant’Angelo (the visible outline is an accidental transfer from the opposite page). The viewpoint is similar to that of another, more detailed composition (see Tate D16358; Turner Bequest CLXXXIX 32).
