Turner often made sketches of local people or animals during his European travels and the Return from Italy sketchbook is particularly rich in figure studies and other incidental details witnessed during the course of the journey. This page contains a drawing of a goat harnessed to a sleigh which is loaded with a large bundle or item of luggage. The location is unknown although it is likely to relate to Turner’s crossing of the Alps, near the Mont Cenis pass. In the top right-hand corner is an additional drawing depicting an unidentified mountainous landscape.
