This page contains three views of mountainous scenery in Savoy. The central composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 23 verso (D16685; Turner Bequest CXCII 22a). Turner has labelled the lower prospect as being at ‘Aiguebelle’, a town at the entrance of the Maurienne Valley in Savoy, approximately twenty miles east of Chambéry. He has additionally annotated the studies with notes concerning the colours (‘Light Yellow’) and atmospheric effects (‘Vapour’) visible within the landscape , as well as noting the ‘Straw Hat’ worn by a man (top left).
For further sketches related to Aiguebelle see also folios 24 verso and 25 verso (D16687 and D16689; Turner Bequest CXCII 23a and 24a) and the Paris, France, Savoy 2 sketchbook (Tate D14119; Turner Bequest CLXXIII 77a).
