The subject of this sketch is a study of a sculptural screen from one of the side aisles within the Duomo (cathedral) of Milan. Turner has annotated the drawing with notes concerning colour and the addition of a figure standing in front of the structure helps establish a sense of scale. Further interior studies of the Duomo can be found on folios 29 and 29 verso (D16695 and D16696; Turner Bequest CXCII 28 and 28a), and also in the Milan to Venice sketchbook (Tate D14344, D14345 and D14488; Turner Bequest CLXXV 12, 13 and 90a). The latter also contains several views of the exterior of the building (see for example Tate D14328; Turner Bequest CLXXV 2). For further sketches of Milan see the introduction to the sketchbook.
