This view of a mountainous landscape appears to depict the town of Lanslebourg at the foot of Mont Cenis in the Cottian Alps. The road winds along the slope to the right and the peak of Mont Cenis itself can be seen just left of centre. At the bottom centre of the sheet there also appears to be a small separate study of a mountain range profile.
For further sketches of Lanslebourg see folio 68 verso–69 (D14103–D14104) whilst for a general discussion of Turner’s passage through the Mont Cenis pass see the Introduction to the sketchbook.
