This page contains two distinct sketches. The larger study is part of a wider landscape composition depicting the Croix des Têtes in the Maurienne valley, which has spilled over from the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 84 (D14132). The second drawing has been executed on the left-hand side of the sheet with the sketchbook held vertically. It also appears to represent a view in the Maurienne valley, probably from the road between St-Jean-de-Maurienne and St-Michel-de-Maurienne.
Finberg’s 1909 catalogue of the Turner Bequest incorrectly lists CLXXIII 83a twice: firstly with the title ‘Valley of the Isère (?)’, and secondly as ‘Glaciers’. These two identifications should have been listed together as a single entry. However, this has not affected subsequent folio numbering.
