The subject of this sketch is St-Michel-de-Maurienne, a village at the heart of the Maurienne valley in Savoy. Turner’s viewpoint is the banks of the River Arc looking north-west towards the belltower of the parish church. Visible in the distance is the mountain range of the Grand Perron des Encombres. A small part of the composition spills over onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 88 verso (D14141). Related views of the village can be found on folios 85 verso and 88 (D14135 and D14140).
